Australian Catholic Education Conference 2025:
A Journey of Hope Anchored in Faith
“Hope means you’ll persevere through the hard times. A visionary faith-based hope means we can see real progress in our three strategic priorities of Faith, Access and Excellence.”
— Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP
A couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of joining educational leaders from across the country at the Australian Catholic Education Conference held in tropical Cairns. The theme, “Hope, anchored in faith,” set the tone for a deeply inspiring and strategically focused gathering that explored the future of Catholic education in Australia.
The conference centred around three key pillars: Faith, Excellence, and Access. These themes were woven throughout a rich tapestry of keynote addresses, presentations, and workshops that offered both spiritual nourishment and practical insights. Topics ranged from Catholic identity, mission, and formation to learning and teaching, leadership and governance, parent and parish engagement, resourcing and infrastructure, and advocacy and marketing.
The event opened with a moving mass, presided over by Bishop Joe Caddy, alongside Archbishop Mark Coleridge, Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP and our own Bishop of Toowoomba, Bishop Ken Howell. Over 1,100 students participated, including a 400-voice choir, creating a vibrant and prayerful atmosphere. In his homily, Bishop Caddy reminded us as educators,
“As we form minds, we should also be forming hearts, respecting human dignity and building a more just and peaceful future.”
One of the most powerful voices at the conference was Sr Nathalie Becquart XMCJ, the most senior woman in the Vatican and a global leader in synodality. She shared:
“We are at a special moment in Catholic education because we are called to implement synodality. Schools have an opportunity to foster a culture of encounter, to issue an invitation to everyone to journey together to find unity in diversity in an exchange of gifts.”
Sr Nathalie urged Catholic educators to embrace five essential qualities: humility, listening, patience, forgiveness, and service, and reminded us:
“Children don’t want institutions; they want authentic relationships. That’s why we must listen and build relationships.”
A highlight of the plenary program for me was the session with Federal Education Minister Jason Clare MP and Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP.
Minister Clare affirmed the vocation of teaching, saying:
“The work everyone here does is the most important in the world. What you are doing as teachers for the next generations of Australians will live on forever.”
The conference was a powerful reminder that listening leads to transformation, and that hope is not passive—it is active, relational, and anchored in faith. I returned from Cairns with renewed energy and a deeper sense of purpose, ready to continue our journey of leading with hope, grounded in faith.
God Bless
Janine
Assistant Principal Mission Identity Report - Mrs Fiona Drew

Another busy term for everyone! Wishing everyone an enjoyable last few weeks of the term.
Father’s Day Celebrations
We look forward to our Father's Day liturgy on Thursday 4th September in MacKillop Hall. Thank you to the Prep students and teachers for leading us in this. We will be holding a Father’s Day afternoon on Friday 12th September. More information will be sent out closer to the date.
Congratulations to Our Confirmation and First Communion Students!
We joyfully congratulate the students in our school community who recently received the Sacrament of Confirmation and Holy Communion. This is a very special step in their faith journey, and we are proud of their commitment, preparation, and reverence. May the gifts of the Holy Spirit continue to guide and strengthen them, and may they always feel the love and presence of Jesus in their hearts. Thank you to the families, sponsors and parish who supported them along the way.
Child Protection Week – Week 9
The theme for Child Protection Week this year is a follow on from last year’s theme of “Every Conversation Matters.” As parents and carers, conversations between you and your children are vital – you are the most important people in your child’s life to advocate for them, listen to them, and share messages of safety and support.
This year during Child Protection Week we encourage parents and carers to speak with their children about their understanding of safety and their support networks. In particular, we encourage parents to educate themselves and have conversations with their children about online safety – an area we know that is a growing risk for our children and young people. You can access useful resources about online safety on the eSafety Commissioner’s website here: The hard-to-have conversations | eSafety Commissioner
Should any student be concerned about how they are being treated by an adult, or another child or young person, they are encouraged to speak up to a trusted staff member or one of our School Student Protection Contacts (SSPCs). All students will be reminded of who our SSPCs are, and that they are depicted on the ‘Keeping Safe’ posters located around the school.
Child Protection really is everyone’s business, and we are committed to making our school a safe, secure, and protected place of learning for every student.
End of Term Liturgy
Year 2 will be leading us in the End of Term Liturgy in MacKillop Hall on Friday 19th September at 9am. All parents are welcome to join us for the morning.

Booking Parent Teacher Interviews
Parents are encouraged to book an interview with their child’s classroom teacher. These meetings are an invaluable opportunity for you to connect with your child’s teachers, discuss their academic progress, and collaborate on strategies to support their learning journey.
Why Parent-Teacher Interviews Matter
Interviews play a crucial role in fostering a strong partnership between home and school. They provide a platform for teachers to share insights about your child's strengths, areas for improvement, and overall development. It’s also a chance for you to voice any concerns and ask questions that can help enhance your child's educational experience.
How to Book Your Interview
Booking your interview is easy! We have streamlined the process to ensure that it is convenient for all families. Here’s how you can secure your time:
1. Login to the parent portal (Sentral for Parents app)
2. Click Interviews
3. Book your preferred interview time
If you are having problems with the app, please contact your child’s teacher or phone the school office to book in. Please note bookings close this afternoon, Thursday 4/9.
I encourage all parents and guardians to take part in this essential process. Your involvement is key to your child’s success and wellbeing. Together, we can create a supportive and enriching environment for our students.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child’s education.

Learning Support News - Mrs Kristy Cameron

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) – Update for Families
August marks the beginning of our annual Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) process. The NCCD is a nationwide initiative that helps schools and education authorities better understand and support students with additional learning needs. It ensures that every student receiving adjustments is recognised and that schools are resourced appropriately to meet those needs.
Why do we collect NCCD data?
The NCCD allows schools to record the support and adjustments provided to students with disability, in line with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005. This data helps inform future planning, funding, and inclusive practices across Australia.
What does this mean for your child?
If your child is being considered for inclusion in this year’s NCCD count, you will be invited to discuss their learning needs and sign a Personalised Planning Grid during the upcoming parent–teacher interviews. This ensures transparency and collaboration between families and the school.
How are students identified for the NCCD?
Schools make decisions based on a range of evidence, including:
- Adjustments provided to support the student (following consultation with the student and/or their parents, guardians, or carers)
- Observations and professional judgement from the school team
- Medical or other professional diagnoses
- Other relevant documentation or information
We appreciate your ongoing partnership in supporting every learner to thrive. If you have any questions about the NCCD or your child’s learning plan, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher or the learning support teacher.
Kind regards,
Kristy Cameron

Prep News - Miss Lucy Norman

Dear Prep Families!
It has been another wonderful term together! It has been a joy to see the preps grow in confidence, ability and friendship as the year goes on. Some of our highlights this term have been, Grandparents Day, 100 days of Prep, Book Week and Flanno for a Farmer.
We have been busy in the classroom improving our reading and writing as well as learning to add numbers together. In Religion we have dived into some Old Testament stories and are learning more about God, His creation and His people.
This term Preps have been learning about digital technologies through our BeeBots. Students have been learning how to code the robots to move from one location to another. They have loved the opportunity to learn and experiment with this type of technology!
Warm Regards,
Mrs Chappell & Miss Norman
Prep / Year 1 News - Mrs Brittany Robinson

Hello from Prep/One,
What an incredible term of learning, laughter, and creativity we’ve shared over the last few weeks! It’s hard to believe we are approaching the end of another term!
During the last few weeks, the children have been learning the necessary skills to be great readers. Our reading and comprehension continue to improve, which is amazing to see. One of the highlights was our Book Week celebrations where the school transformed into a parade of characters! From mermaids to Gruffalos, the children proudly paraded their costumes and shared their favourite books with such joy and excitement. It was a beautiful reminder of how books can spark imagination and bring us so much happiness!
During writing sessions, we’ve started to look at information reports, with a special focus on one of Australia’s most beloved creatures… the wombat! The students have been listening carefully for interesting facts, learning how to organise information, and will put this information into their own report.
Science has taken a creative twist as we have been exploring push and pull forces. The students have been busy designing their own toys, thinking about how they move, and planning how to bring their ideas to life using recyclable materials. Soon, we’ll be rolling up our sleeves and building these toys. It’s been amazing to see their imaginations and problem-solving skills shine during this hands-on learning.
I am very proud of the children and the progress they are making, and I am excited to see their confidence and skills further develop as they prepare for the challenges of Term Four.

Year 1 / 2 News - Miss Sophie Shelton

Hello from Year 1 and 2!
We are nearing the end of a very busy term and are looking forward to some rest over the Spring holidays! We can’t wait for the beautiful weather to bloom.
Below is a snapshot of what we have been up to:
In English we have been learning about the features of information reports through the focus text The Trees: Learning Tree Knowledge with Uncle Kuu. The students created their own information report that focused on why trees are special for us. We researched how we use trees, why we need them, who uses trees, and how to care for them. We have also begun looking at a new focus text titled Opal and Dart. We have been using this book to work on our comprehension strategies and even get to write a letter to a bird friend, to tell them how to build a safe nest!
In Maths, we have been focusing on so many fun and interesting topics! Both year levels have been measuring and comparing length, mass and capacity with informal units. The Year 2 students have had a little bit of practice using formal measuring units too! We have also looked at the features of 2D and 3D shapes, and how we can compare these. Finally, we are beginning to look at turns and positions! We have been learning to locate positions in two dimensional representations of a family space and move by following directions and pathways.
In Religion, we have been learning about the Creation story. We have learned about being Stewards of Creation and how that may look in a school and home environment. We have discussed that the message of Creation is to be Co-Creators with God, which means to work together to look after our Earth!
Wishing you all a great end of term!
Sophie Shelton

Year 2 News - Miss Jacqueline Klaassen

In Year 2, we have been busily exploring a wide range of exciting learning experiences across all subject areas.
In English, students recently completed our unit *The Trees*, where they created their own response books explaining the importance of trees, why we need them, and who relies on them. This mentor text also sparked rich discussions about Aboriginal elders and the many ways they used trees, including for medicine and bush tea. We are now moving into our next unit, based on the text *Opal and Dart*, which tells the story of two swallows migrating from Tasmania to Queensland.
In Mathematics, our focus has been on measurement, time, and transformations, alongside continuing to strengthen recall of multiplication facts.
In Science, students have been closely observing the moon and recording its daily changes over a 30-day cycle. This unit has also led us to explore constellations and learn how First Nations People were the very first astronomers. A highlight has been discovering the ‘Emu in the Sky’ constellation and its cultural significance to Indigenous Australians.
In HASS, students have been learning about the world’s continents and oceans. They also explored how Earth looks from a satellite image and compared this to traditional maps.
In Religion, our focus has been on the Old and New Testaments. Students have been learning how to recognise which stories belong in each part of the Bible and why.
We have also spent valuable time on emotional regulation. Students have been learning about different parts of the brain; the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex and how each one supports us. We’ve named our amygdala the “shark,” as it acts like our brain’s alarm system. Together, we’ve discussed how sometimes our “shark” goes off even when there is no real danger, such as when we are trying something new. Students have also practised a variety of tools and strategies they can use to calm their bodies when they find themselves in the “red zone.”
Thank you for your continued support. I am so proud of the effort and enthusiasm the Year 2 students bring to their learning every day!
Year 3 News - Ms Rebekah Bowdler

Hello from Year 3,
What a great term we have had together! It is hard to believe that this term is drawing to a close and we are almost at the last term of the year!
In Maths, we have been focusing on number patterns, measurement, 3D objects, and maps of familiar environments.
Our work in English has seen us focus on procedures and explanations. The students have enjoyed participating in lots of hands-on experiences as part of this. Take a look at the photos to see some of what we have been up to!
In HaSS, we have focused on who makes rules, why rules are important in our school and local community, and the consequences of rules not being followed. We have also investigated why people participate within communities and discussed how we can contribute to, and actively participate in, different communities.
Science has seen the learning focus on the different ways that heat energy is produced. We have conducted experiments about how heat energy moves and flows from one object to another. The students have come to understand that we can measure heat using thermometers, and they have investigated the effects of heat energy in our everyday lives.
In Health, the students have been researching the intention of health information and messages, and how these influence personal decisions and behaviours.
We are looking forward to meeting with you all in Week 9 and discussing your child’s learning at our Parent Teacher Interviews.
Enjoy the rest of the week,
Miss Rebekah Bowdler

Year 4 News - Miss Tanya Hearne

It’s hard to believe we’re already at the end of Term 3! With so many exciting activities and proud achievements, time really has flown!
In English, Year 4 have been sharpening their persuasive writing skills by exploring the power of rhetorical questions, high modality words, and emotive language, all in the name of convincing their audience. This ties into our HASS unit, where we've been exploring the role of rules and laws in our community, investigating the function of local councillors, and even running our own class election! It’s been wonderful to see some natural persuaders emerge, confidently crafting arguments.
In Maths, Year 4 have been flexing their number sense muscles, strengthening multiplication and division strategies, exploring fractions, and mastering the art of telling time, converting units, and calculating duration. To bring these concepts to life, students have tackled real-world problems and worked collaboratively to deepen their understanding in fun and meaningful ways.
As Term 3 wraps up, I’m incredibly proud of all that Year 4 have achieved. We’re looking forward to the adventures Term 4 will bring!

Year 5 News - Mr Benjamin Minnikin

As we approach the end of Term 3, it is certain that the Year 5 students have made the most of every opportunity to learn, grow, and connect. One of the standout experiences was our school camp, which was packed with fun, adventure, and laughter. From thrilling outdoor challenges to team-building games, the students embraced every moment with excitement. These activities not only helped them step outside their comfort zones but also built resilience, strengthened friendships, and showed them the true value of teamwork.
In the classroom, hands-on learning has taken centre stage. In Maths, students have explored measurement by constructing angles and designing paddle-pop stick bridges, combining creativity with critical thinking. These practical tasks have sparked curiosity and deepened their understanding of mathematical concepts. They’ve also connected their Maths learning to life beyond the classroom, mastering the art of choosing the right units of measurement for various tasks, an essential skill that will serve them well in everyday life.
Science has been a particular highlight, with students engaging in investigations that revealed how weathering, erosion, and deposition can shape our planet. Their enthusiasm and thoughtful observations have brought the Earth’s dynamic processes to life.
In Religion, students have been inspired by the life and legacy of Mary MacKillop. Through rich discussions and reflection, they’ve come to appreciate how her values and actions continue to influence Australian Catholic education today.
The Year 5 students thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Catholic Schools' touch football and netball gala day. It was fantastic to see them represent St Stephen’s with pride, showing great sportsmanship and teamwork in each game. It was a great chance for them to connect with peers from other schools, enjoy friendly competition, and celebrate their love of sport.
Looking ahead, leadership will also become a focus for Year 5 when moving into Term 4, where we will begin to look at the qualities and actions that will make our students excellent Year 6 leaders in 2026.

Year 6 News - Mrs Danielle Conway

What a term it’s been! Term 3 has flown by in a whirlwind of learning, growth, and memorable experiences. Our Year 6 students have embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm and resilience, making it a truly rewarding time for both students and staff.
One of the standout highlights was our Year 5 & 6 camp. It was an absolute pleasure to spend quality time with students outside the classroom, watching them challenge themselves, support one another, and grow in confidence. From outdoor adventures to team-building activities, students pushed their personal boundaries and developed valuable skills in collaboration and leadership. The laughter, encouragement, and sense of achievement shared during camp will be remembered for years to come.
As we reflect on the term, it’s clear that the learning has extended far beyond the curriculum—into friendships, personal growth, and unforgettable experiences.
Year 6 English: Exploring Gallipoli Through Storytelling
One of our highlights in classroom learning this term has been students diving deep into history through a highly engaging and meaningful English unit focused on the Gallipoli Campaign. This topic has sparked genuine interest and enthusiasm across the cohort, making it an absolute joy to teach.
Throughout the unit, students explored a variety of texts to build their understanding of the events surrounding Gallipoli. These included historical accounts, personal letters, and fictionalised retellings, all of which helped paint a vivid picture of the experiences faced by Anzac soldiers.
The highlight of the unit was the students’ own creative writing. Each student crafted a narrative from the perspective of an Anzac soldier arriving at Anzac Cove. These stories have been nothing short of incredible—rich in emotion, detail, and imagination. It’s been inspiring to see how deeply students connected with the topic, and how that connection translated into powerful storytelling.
The effort and care students put into their writing has been evident in every piece. Their narratives reflect not only their understanding of the historical context but also their empathy and creativity. It’s clear that this unit has left a lasting impression, and we couldn’t be prouder of their work.
Looking Ahead to a Special Final Term
As we approach our final term together, we’re filled with excitement and a touch of nostalgia. It’s hard to believe how quickly this year has flown by, and we’re so grateful for the time we’ve shared with this truly special group of Year 6 students. The final term promises to be full of celebration, reflection, and continued learning, and we’re looking forward to making the most of every moment. Whether it’s preparing for graduation, enjoying end-of-year activities, or simply spending time together in the classroom, we’re cherishing the opportunity to finish the year on a high with these remarkable young people.
God bless.
Mrs Danni Conway and Mrs Amber Bingham
